Dear former Lord Mayors and Sheriffs
I have received an email from former Lord Mayor, Barbara Boyce, who has asked me to share this message with you:
“I am very sad to announce that Gill Brian, who was my Sheriff in 2017/18, died of cancer in St Leonard’s Hospice on 21 July 2020.
“I cannot believe that Gill is no longer with us. She was one of the liveliest, most active people that I have ever known. She taught thousands of students at Huntington School, when we were on civic events it wasn’t unusual for some cheeky passer-by to yell “hello Miss” at Gill. She also volunteered for many years as a Samaritan supporting some of the most desperate and lonely people. In addition she ran coffee mornings and craft groups for elderly people at St Chad’s church in York. Gill and myself travelled together to India, Sri Lanka, Poland and Germany, and until recently had been hoping to go to Italy next year. This is an incredibly sad day and she will be missed by so many people.
“Because of the Covid 19 crisis the funeral will of necessity be small. However Gill’s sons, Jim and David, are hoping to arrange a real celebration of her life that she would have enjoyed, perhaps in a year’s time.
“Gill had a lot to be proud of, her enthusiastic membership of York’s Civic Party, her dedicated service to her students and everyone she worked to help over the years and most of all her two sons who are a true credit to her.”
Our condolences go to all of Gill’s family.
