I was born in Derby on the 21st of October 1943. My Father had moved there during the war to work for Rolls Royce. After the war my family moved back to Lincoln where my Father worked as a Pattern Maker for Ruston and Hornsby. My early School days were spent at Skellingthorpe Primary School followed by Skellingthorpe Junior School. At the age of 11, I spent a year at Sincil Bank Girls School following which I moved to the new Boultham Moor Secondary School on De Wint Avenue. After finishing School I attended the Lincoln Technical Collage studying Shorthand and Typing.
After qualifying I obtained employment as a Secretary for Andrew Race & Co in St Swithins Square followed 2 years later by employment with Langley Phillips & Coleman. It was during this time I struck up my friendship with Yvonne Bodger (the Mayor of Lincoln 2016) who was also working as a secretary, and we have maintained our good friendship for more than 50 years.
In 1965 I married Michael Willerton who was an Engineer at Ruston & Hornsby. In 1969 my Husband’s employment moved to Annan, Scotland and moved back to live in Heighington in 1973 when Michael become Chief Engineer with Robey of Lincoln. During this time I returned to work for Langley’s as it was known then, firstly in their newly opened Estate Agents Department and after some years to work as a Secretary for one of the Partners.
In 2003 my Husband’s employment changed once again and we moved to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia where he worked for 4 years. Life there was very different. We did a lot of travelling to some interesting parts of the World. While living in Malaysia I did a great deal of charity work, including aids, orphaned and abandoned children, children with special needs, all of which was hugely rewarding. On our return to the UK and now both retired we joined the U3A (University of the Third Age) where we have joined many interesting groups.
I enjoy classical music and ballet, making many trips to London to listen to concerts in the Royal Albert Hall and Southbank as well as to the Drill Hall, LPAC and Cathedral. We are friends of the Cathedral and attend functions there, especially the Organ Recitals.
In 2008 I donated my Father’s tool box to the Cathedral’s Works Department which I am told is used by apprentices. Other hobbies I have are gardening, walking, playing Mahjong and visiting fine Restaurants.
